Pier Geering (1947–2024) was raised in Barcelona, São Paulo, Basel, and the Romandie. This geographically and culturally fragmented biography profoundly shaped both his artistic practice and his elusive persona. Geering’s works combine aesthetic formalism with an idiosyncratic symbolic language, drawing on a wide range of artistic, literary, and philosophical references. Alongside his visual work, he wrote multilingual poetry whose fragmented character echoes the layered imagery of his paintings and drawings. Geering’s oeuvre reflects the unusual path of his life. Over the years he worked in many roles—among them butler, bouncer, talent scout, manager, cultural organizer, curator, lifeguard, and museum director—while consistently pursuing his artistic practice. For Geering, these experiences became material for his work, forming an unconventional body of art created in a lifelong, ambivalent dialogue with the established art system.
